Just steps from historic Gastown, Skwachàys Lodge stands out as one of Canada’s most meaningful Indigenous cultural spaces. This unique hybrid project is part boutique hotel, part art gallery, and part residency for Indigenous artists, while also supporting the homeless community.
Launched in 2012 by the BC Indigenous Housing Society, it serves a double mission: uplift Indigenous creators and fund social housing through tourism revenues.

🎨 Immersive Art in Every Room
Each of the 18 hotel rooms is co-designed by an Indigenous artist and a local interior designer, resulting in bold and immersive storytelling spaces. Think carved totems, sacred symbols, beadwork patterns, and modern textures—all echoing rich cultural narratives.
“Each room tells a story. Each wall holds memory.”
— David Eddy, Executive Director
The Skwachàys Gallery, located on the ground floor, showcases and sells works from resident artists: contemporary paintings, jewelry, sculpture, and textile art.

🛌 A Powerful Model of Social Impact
Beyond tourism, the Lodge offers free artist residencies that include:
- Private art studios
- Subsidized housing units
- Professional mentorship
- Marketing and gallery representation
All hotel revenue directly funds support programs for homeless Indigenous individuals, proving that art and economy can build bridges.
🌐 Recognized and Celebrated in 2025
During Indigenous History Month 2025, Skwachàys Lodge received renewed media attention. It is now widely viewed as a model of ethical, culturally immersive tourism, where visitors engage with living traditions rather than commodified stereotypes.
Inspired by its success, similar projects are now emerging across Canada.
✅ Conclusion: More Than a Hotel—A Living Story
Skwachàys Lodge is a place of pride, memory, and transformation. It bridges art and activism, hospitality and healing, offering hope and dignity through Indigenous creativity.
