On May 14, 2025, Nova Scotia announced the construction of a new community solar garden in West Petpeswick, within the Halifax Regional Municipality. The project, named Petpeswick Solar, is part of the province’s Community Solar Program, allowing residents to subscribe to clean electricity at reduced costs without installing solar panels on their properties.

🔋 Project Details

  • Capacity: 2.2 megawatts, enough to power approximately 900 homes.
  • Partners: AI Renewables and the Chabad Lubavitch Society of Atlantic Canada.
  • Provincial Funding: $440,000 to support construction.
  • Location: West Petpeswick Road, Halifax Regional Municipality.

This project is one of three new community solar gardens announced in May 2025, with the other two located in Brooklyn (Annapolis County) and Sydney (Cape Breton).

🌱 Environmental and Social Goals

The Community Solar Program aims to add 100 megawatts of solar energy to Nova Scotia’s electricity grid by 2030, contributing to the province’s goal of 80% renewable energy and net-zero emissions by 2035.

The program also enables residents who cannot install solar panels (due to financial constraints, space limitations, or housing situations) to access clean and affordable energy.
