In a world where plastic waste represents one of the greatest environmental challenges, a Canadian startup has chosen to turn the problem into a solution.

Based in New Brunswick, PLAEX Building Systems develops the PLAEX Bricks™: sustainable building blocks made of 90% recycled plastics and aggregates.

Inspired by the LEGO® concept, these bricks are 35% lighter than concrete blocks, easy to assemble, water-resistant, and designed for modular construction. (World Bio Market Insights)

Innovation with purpose

The company’s founder, Cameron Pleasants, explains that the idea was born while observing the vast amount of industrial plastic ending up in landfills:

“I had this kind of crazy idea: what if we could turn plastic waste into building bricks, like the LEGO® blocks we used to play with as kids?” (Canada.ca)

Today, PLAEX collaborates with local communities to recover post-consumer plastics and even debris left behind by natural disasters, such as the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona in 2022. In this way, the startup combines circular economy, resilience, and smart design.

PLAEX and its progress: current applications and future potential

Currently, PLAEX Bricks™ are used in non-residential structures such as retaining walls, landscaping projects, or small sheds (Plaex.ca). However, the company is already undergoing ASTM certification, which would allow them to use the bricks for housing construction by 2025.

The impact goes far beyond construction:

  • Reducing pressure on landfills and polluted oceans.
  • Creating a new market for green jobs.
  • Inspiring cities and startups to replicate the innovation.

A global movement led by PLAEX

PLAEX’s initiative connects with a worldwide movement to transform plastic into useful materials. From bricks in Latin America crafted by women recyclers (New York Times), to projects in Africa where recycled plastic is used to build schools and roads, the message is clear: what was once waste can now become the foundation of the future.
