July 2025 – Neuchâtel, Switzerland — Swiss startup Sun-Ways has begun testing a removable solar panel system that fits between railway tracks. This revolutionary technology is attracting attention from countries around the world for its potential to transform unused railway space into clean energy sources.

🚆 A “solar mat” unrolled by train

The concept is as innovative as it is simple: a train designed by Scheuchzer SA deploys pre-assembled photovoltaic panels onto the tracks like a solar carpet. This system allows for rapid installation—up to 1,000 m² per day—and can be easily removed when maintenance is needed.

🌱 Pilot Project Highlights

  • Location: 100-meter section on the open railway line of transN, in the canton of Neuchâtel
  • System Specs: 48 panels of 380 W each, totaling 18 kW
  • Energy Output: Estimated 16 MWh/year fed into the local grid
  • Budget: Around CHF 585,000 (approx. €623,000)

🌍 International Interest Rising

Countries like France, Belgium, Indonesia, South Korea, and Luxembourg are watching closely. According to Sun-Ways, this system could be installed on up to 50% of the world’s railways, potentially generating 1 TWh per year in Switzerland alone, which equals about 2% of national electricity consumption.

🔧 Smart Tech, Safe Design

The panels are completely removable to allow quick access for rail maintenance. They are fitted with automatic cleaning systems and sensors to counter vibrations and dirt. Future versions are being tested with anti-glare and anti-freeze coatings for better durability.

✅ Summary

Sun-Ways’ solar panel system offers an ingenious way to harness renewable energy from unused track space without disrupting rail operations. If successful, this innovation could reshape how railway infrastructure contributes to the energy transition globally.
